What has transpired last Saturday produced difficulties for the 12-man committee in selecting the top four because of the one-loss teams who are deserving to be there. Moreover, the fact that the committee favored three one-loss teams against an undefeated team in the past would mean that everything is possible.
Alabama Crimson Tide
No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide defeated Missouri by 29 points in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday. Considered as the best conference in college football, Nick Saban and his team would be the No. 1 team in the first ever college football playoff rankings to be released on Sunday at 12:30 PM ET. Without a doubt, Alabama had the most difficult schedule, losing only to Ole Miss on the road.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon overpowered Arizona by 38 points in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Marcus Mariota displayed a classic game by his three touchdowns on the ground. The high-powered offense fo the Ducks deserve to be part of the 2014 college football playoff.
Florida State Seminoles
Florida State outlasted Georgia Tech 37-35 in the ACC championship Game. By staying undefeated regardless of the outcome, the Florida State Seminoles made their case as probably the No. 1 team using the old BCS system. The Seminoles will have a chance to defend and to prove that they are the best team in college football, not the one loss teams.
To the eyes of many, Alabama, Oregon and Florida State have earned the three of four tickets to the college football playoff. The problem lies in selecting the fourth team (Ohio State, TCU and Baylor).
Before the start of the season, college football enthusiasts had believed that controversies would arise because four teams are only to be selected, not minding that there are five major conferences. Which conference will be left out? The Big Ten or the Big 12?
The case of Ohio State Buckeyes
The Ohio State Buckeyes overpowered No. 13 Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten Championship Game. Coach Urban Meyer’s case is that his team is the champion of the Big Ten. With great display of offensive attacks without quarterback J.T. Barrett, the Buckeyes might have captured the attention of the selection committee.
The cases of TCU and Baylor
TCU was ranked third on Tuesday’s college football rankings. However, the Horned Frogs are not secured this week because they played an unranked team, beating Iowa State by 52 points.
The Baylor Bears increased their chances to overtake TCU by defeating Kansas State 38-27. Baylor and TCU shared the Big 12 championship. There’s no championship game in Big 12 and it might affect the selection committee.
Which team gets the other spot?
The Ohio State Buckeyes probably will be the fourth team in the College Football Playoff Rankings.
