Gilas Pilipinas, Asian Games Schedule, to meet Qatar, South Korea and Kazakhstan

The Philippine National Basketball team continues its search for the Gold Medal on Friday, September 26, against Qatar at 5:30 PM Manila time.

After losing to Iran, hopefully the best team in Asia, Gilas Pilipinas would love to bounce back after squandering a seven-point advantage in the fourth quarter. Gilas Pilipinas have to be worried about having to play Qatar because it is still undefeated. Moreover Qatar stunned Japan in the preliminary round.

The Qataris have their star player 6’5″ Khalid Suliman Abdi to dismantle the defense of Gilas. Coach Chot Reyes would be using Gabe Norwood to contain Abdi.

It was obvious in Gilas Pilipinas game Thursday that big man June Mar Fajardo had not played his best by making so many turnovers. He is not supposed to be the player to be used as replacement for Douthit. Reyes might rather utilize Japeth Aguilar.

The Philippine team will meet South Korea on Saturday at 1:00 PM, and against Kazakhstan on Sunday at 3:00 PM.

Two teams will advance to the semifinal round, and probably two wins would be enough to be in the next round.

Iran, China, Japan and Mongolia consist of the other group. Two teams are also going to advance from this group. Expected to get out from this group would be Iran and China.

In the semifinal round, the No. team would face the No 2 team from the other group. This means that if Gilas Pilipinas would advance, it has to meet either Iran or China.

Based on the Thursday’s game against Iran, Gilas Pilipinas is well-scouted by the Iranians. Jimmy Alapag could pull the trigger outside the three-pointer because Iranians were well-prepared.

Hopefully, Gilas Pilipinas will be able advance to the next round in the Asian Games.
