The Detroit Lions take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday’s NFL schedule at the Wembley Stadium, London, England.
With all the offensive firepower of the Lions at display, their defense is the primary reason they are on top of the NFC North with 5-2 record. It’s uncommon for the Lions to have the vaunted defense in toppling their opponents this season.
Because of the improvements in defense, the Lions seek to dismantle the under achieving Falcons in London. Moreover, Detroit maintains the high-powered passing game through Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson.
Lions defensive tackle said in one of his interviews, “We’re not afraid to go anywhere, anyplace and go out there and play and execute what we need to get done. It comes from our coach. The attitude that he brings with us, understanding that it doesn’t make a difference whether we’re in London, or at home, or have to go to Atlanta.
Defensively, Detroit yields 216.9 yards per game in passing while 73.4 in passing, total of 290.3 yards per game. Detroit allowed 15.0 points per game, which is second in the NFL.
With the offensive juggernaut and defensive stands, the Lions will have a chance to put the Falcons into their five losing streak.
In a win over the Saints, 24-23 last Sunday, the Lions played in defense through an interception from Glover Quin, then it was followed by Stafford’s 5-yard TD.
“I think you learn a little bit about your team as you go, I really do,” coach Jim Caldwell told the Lions’ website.
The slumping Falcons have to shake themselves before it’s too late. They are expected to be in the playoff this season but they are not living up to the expectations.
The Falcons suffered yet another terrible defeat, 29-7, over the Ravens last Sunday. Matt Ryan accumulated 228 yards and a touchdown. He has been in misery in the last two games as he was sacked nine times.
Surely, the offensive line of the Falcons has something to do about the lapses in protecting the quarterback. While the offensive line lost many players already like Joe Hawley, Lamar Holmes and Sam Baker, Peter Konz suffered a season-ending knee injury.
