Gilas Pilipinas (Philippines) takes on Croatia in the opening day of FIBA World Cup 2014 on August 30, Saturday at 6:30 PM (Philippine Standard Time) / 6:30 AM (EDT US Time) in Spain.
Gilas Pilipinas is composed of selected players from the PBA, with the addition of naturalized Andray Blatche as a reinforcement. Having Blatche in the roster means that the Philippines will have a solid center that can match the bigs of Croatia. But many experts believe that the Filipinos are the heavy underdogs.
Croatia on the other hand is filled with reliable and powerful players. Dario Saric, who was drafted by the 76ers in the NBA, is a flexible small and power forward to match up with probably Marc Pingris or Japeth Aguilar.
Another matchup to see would be Blatche and the 7’1″ Ante Tomic down low. It would be an interesting battle in the boards.
In the Philippines, Gilas Pilipinas vs Croatia is available on TV5 and BTV. In the United States, the Philippines vs Croatia is televised on ESPN3.
Will Gilas Pilipinas be able to pull off an upset?
