Akron Zips vs Howard Bison: Kyle Pohl is the key

Akron takes on Howard in one of the college football games on Thursday, August 28, at 7:00 PM ET, at the InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field, Akron, OH.

The Zips understand that playing against a FCS team is not supposed to be taken for granted as they lost to James Madison in 2013. Akron has to start the season with a win so that it has the momentum play against FBS rivals. For the Zips to have a successful season, winning against FCS teams is a must.

Akron has the momentum, winning three-streak games to end the season, and it has the ability to contain opposing teams’ offense. Akron has to keep the attacking the defense of Howard until victory is within reach.

Kyle Pohl is the starting quarterback of the Akron Zips. Pohl knows how to play with such confidence because this is his second year as a starter. However, He needs to be sharp at all times to conquer the visiting Howard Bison.

In 2013, the offense of the Zips averaged 219.4 in passing and 122.6 in rushing. Clearly, the Zips have the weapons to destroy the opponents’ defense not only in the air, but also on the ground. The Zips had a 5-7 record.

Howard is not a pushover football team. In 2013, the Bison finished 6-6, while 4-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Surely, Howard is to be led by MEAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 Greg McGhee. Truly, his ability to carry the load as the quarterback would be the key for Howard. McGahee, a mobile quarterback, had 2,379 passing yards and 896 rushing yards, with 19 total touchdowns last year.

Adding to the threat produced by McGhee for the Bison is running back Anthony Philyaw. He showed he could play by getting into the end zone 16 times and accumulating 721 yards on the ground.
