Ateneo survives a potential upset

Ateneo de Manila University escaped a narrow win over the University of the Philippines, 70-69 Wednesday in the UAAP season 77 Men’s basketball tournament at SMART-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Mikee Reyes was fouled by Newsome in his jump shot with a second left in the clock. Reyes had the chance to snatch the win for the Maroons against the Blue Eagles with the two free throws. An upset was on the line but his first try fell short. His second free throw was in and out as Ateneo grabbed the rebound to secure the victory.

Reyes led the Fighting Maroons with 19 points; he exploded in the fourth quarter where he scored 15 points, while JR Gallarza scored 18 points.

Kiefer Ravena paced the Blue Eagles with 18 points, five rebounds, and dishing out seven assists, and point guard Nico Elorde added12 points. Ateneo got also contribution from Thirdy Ravena, Gideon Babilonia, and Arvin Tolentino as they scored each with eight points.

With the victory, the Blue Eagles now at 9-3 to remain behind FEU at the top of the UAAP standings.
