Senegal beats Puerto Rico in FIBA Worl Cup

Senegal stunned highly favored Puerto Rico with a 82-75 victory in their clashed in the Group B match up of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup on Sunday in Seville, Spain.

Senegal lost their opening campaign to Greece 87-64 on Saturday, but bounced back to beat Puerto Rico to snatch its first win in the World Cup. This was the first win of Senegal in World Cup in a long time since 1998 when they defeated South Korea.

Puerto Rico with notable NBA players like JJ Barea, Renaldo Balkman, and Carlos Arroyo started hot as they end the first quarter 29-14. Mouhammad Faye sparked a run for Senegal that tied the game to 29 all.

The game was tight until the fourth quarter. But the Senegal piled up a 10 point deficit in the last minute to run away the victory.

Faye led the Senegal with 20 points while Gorgui Dieng had double-double with 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Balkman scored 21 points led the Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico may also lose the service of playmaker Arroyo as he was brought to the hospital due to a sprained ankle.

Senegal and Puerto Rico were the both two teams that the Gilas Pilipinas eyeing to defeat in the tournament.
Senegal will face Croatia on September 1 while Puerto Rico will look for their first win in the tournament against Greece.
